Invitation for ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓÆµ Sea Grant proposals

ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓÆµ Sea Grant invites preliminary proposals for research projects to be conducted between February 2026 and January 2028. Creative and innovative research proposals are sought in the natural, social, and education sciences that address needs and engage in ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓÆµ communities in one or more specific focus areas. ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓÆµ Sea Grant will host a one-hour webinar on Dec. 6 at 10:30 a.m. for those interested in submitting preliminary proposals.

ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓÆµ Bookstore Bundle for spring 2025

The ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓÆµ Bookstore Bundle makes access to required course materials affordable and convenient for students. Through this program, students can rent all required textbooks, lab manuals, access codes, digital materials and electronic books for a flat fee. These materials may be conveniently delivered by the first day of class. All eligible students are automatically enrolled upon registering for classes. For students who prefer to purchase their course materials on their own, the option to opt-out will be available between Dec. 16, 2024, through Jan. 24, 2025.

Writing Center offers new thesis, dissertation services

The center's new graduate writing support specialist, Victoria Oyewola, is available to work with graduate students at every stage of their writing process, from brainstorming to revising their theses and dissertations.

Friday Focus: Accountability to our students

Earlier this semester, we tried something new at Convocation. With some help from ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓÆµ student-athletes, almost 300 people got out their phones or logged onto their computers and made their voices heard with the new polling software. In warm-up rounds of the cell phone voting, 192 of you chose the sledding hill over the ice climbing wall, 145 of you asked to see more outdoor activities for employees on campus, and a surprising 14 of you did not predict ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓÆµ to own the ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓÆµ Airlines Governor’s Cup this year (we are going for our 14th straight win this year!) And, relevant to this week, a plurality of you voted to see a Chancellor’s Forum on R1. Last Tuesday, we hosted the Chancellor’s R1 Forum for close to 300 people (~60 in person). Thank you to everyone who attended and participated. It will take all of us.

Request for Proposal for State of ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓÆµ operating budget requests: FY27 budget cycle

In preparation for the FY27 State of ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓÆµ budget cycle, ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓÆµ leadership is soliciting funding proposals from ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓÆµ faculty and staff for state operating base funding or one-time capital research or IT-related projects. Operating proposals can include projects, staffing, or other operating needs. Capital research requests are typically large-scale and can include specialized equipment, research or technology equipment, or other research-focused proposals of interest to ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓÆµ. FY27 begins July 1, 2026, and ends June 30, 2027. The deadline for proposal submission is Jan. 31, 2025.

BLaST celebrates John Harley as November 2024 Scientist of the Month

John Harley, a research assistant professor at the University of ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓÆµ Southeast Juneau, is the BLaST Scientist of the Month for November 2024! Harley has been involved with BLaST since 2015. He was a former BLaST Graduate Mentoring Research Assistant for two years as a Ph.D. student in biochemistry and graduated from the University of ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓÆµ Fairbanks in 2017. Harley’s research focuses on a One Health framework, where linkages between humans and the global and local environment and animals are seen as connected.
