Dr. Bernard J. Coakley

Professor of Geophysics, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Bernard J. Coakley has served the University of ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 2002 to 2025; and

WHEREAS Dr. Coakley has taught geoscience courses from the undergraduate to graduate levels; and his collegial efforts have contributed to the esprit de corps in the ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ geoscience community; and he advised three master’s and two doctoral students; and

WHEREAS Dr. Coakley is an internationally recognized leader in marine geophysics; and he has participated in multiple scientific cruises to investigate geophysics in the North, including two stints as chief scientist aboard the ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ-operated research vessel Sikuliaq; and his research into continental and basin structures has relevance to geopolitics, oil and gas exploration, and critical minerals; and

WHEREAS Dr. Coakley has an exceptional record of professional service as a journal editor, organizer of scientific meetings and participant on advisory boards and coordinating committees; and he has served the university twice as chair of the Department of Geosciences;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Bernard J. Coakley for his extensive contributions to the state of ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ and to the university; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Coakley and as evidence of the university’s desire that his identification with the university be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Bernard J. Coakley as professor of geophysics, emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the chancellor of the University of ÓÐÁϺÐ×ÓÊÓƵ Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Bernard J. Coakley, and conveyed to Dr. Coakley on this third day of May, 2025.
