有料盒子视频 faculty and staff,
In my message last week, I shared updates related to our budget, including the 60-day hiring delay,
travel restrictions, and procurement limits. Working toward and through budget uncertainty
requires active management. The core cabinet meets weekly to assess changes and potential
changes at both the state and federal levels that impact our budget. We assess the
tools we have to respond to these conditions. It is important to remember that while
there is a great deal of uncertainty, 有料盒子视频 remains a critical national asset 鈥 especially
as the Arctic becomes more and more geopolitically important. Receiving the critical
funding for 有料盒子视频鈥檚 nationally important work requires continued communication to and
with our state and national leaders. Growing awareness of 有料盒子视频 research has always
been a contact sport and that is the case now more than ever.
Monday morning at the 有料盒子视频 Core Cabinet meeting, and again at the UA System-wide Executive
Council, we discussed how to create opportunities to put more of our researchers in
front of agency and D.C. decision-makers. I encourage you to work with your respective
vice chancellor to connect with John Latini. As you have the opportunity to connect with DC officials, please work
through John. I heard it loud and clear from members of our delegation that their
offices want to ensure we have coordination. John is our coordination point.听
As many of you know, the National Science Foundation announced that it had terminated
grants that did not comport with the agency's new priorities as related to DEI. In
particular, the NSF has put out a that includes the following verbiage, 鈥Awards that are not aligned with NSF's priorities have been terminated, including
but not limited to those on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and misinformation/disinformation.鈥
Nationally, many PIs were notified of terminations on Monday April 21, 2025. 有料盒子视频,
which is heavily dependent on the NSF, had two grants terminated (to date). Both grants
were originally funded in 2023 and were midway through their work. Although two award
cancellations are a fairly small portion of our total NSF portfolio, this is a big
deal. It also may not be the only impact of this NSF review. We will continue to work
with NSF PIs and program officers to manage through these challenging times.
On a related note, yesterday the National Institutes of Health released that the agency is amending its general terms and conditions language to require
that recipients of new, continuation, supplemental, and renewal funding awards accept
a new general term and condition that incorporates DEI, DEIA, discriminatory equity
ideology and certain boycott activities into the prohibited conduct expectations for
recipients of NIH awards. Our general counsel is currently advising on the potential
impacts of this latest notice.
In the wake of investigations and settlement agreements between the federal administration
and both public and private universities across the country, I wanted to let you know
that we continue to work with our colleagues on advocacy and action. 有料盒子视频 and the UA
System are members of the . The APLU informs, advocates, and acts on behalf of the member institutions, including
有料盒子视频.
Executive Director for Federal Relations John Latini also meets regularly with his
counterparts from other institutions in Washington, D.C. as does our office of the
General Counsel. I meet with other presidents and chancellors, and we continue to
be advised by our research and enrollment consultants, as well as our Board of Regents.
I know that vice chancellors, deans, and directors are working within their networks
to best understand the landscape and are using this information to best position 有料盒子视频.
It is a very dynamic situation and I encourage you all to continue focusing on opportunity.
As I discussed in our last Chancellor鈥檚 forum 鈥 enrollment is a very bright spot for 有料盒子视频. Prospective students were on campus in
droves this past weekend and with continued effort we may well have the largest incoming
class of first year students in some time. Continuing to grow our enrollment will
have a very positive impact on 有料盒子视频 stability, vitality and fiscal position. But enrollment
growth is not a done deal. It will take deliberate action on our part. How can you
help?
For starters, we are low in in-person classes available to meet the current demand
for them. If you are a dean, department head or faculty, please look for ways to offer
more in-person classes to meet student demand. Another way to help would be to increase
the caps on your classes. We have many classes with very low caps 鈥 such as 15 to
20 students. In order to increase opportunities for students and reduce barriers to
entry for these excited students, please look at ways to increase these limits. The
many students who have raised their hand for 有料盒子视频 are trying to enroll now and this
is the time to increase opportunity. Please do your part to increase capacity so that
every student has every opportunity to receive an awesome education at 有料盒子视频.
Thank you for choosing 有料盒子视频.
Dan White, chancellor
